Hey there! It’s been a while (there’s a good reason for that so read on!). I thought I really should give an update on who we are, what we’re about and what you can expect of us!
I’m the founder of Inching Closer. I’ve had a burning passion to create since I was little. I started knitting when I was about six years old, sewing followed on closely behind that, along with needlework, quilting, embroidery, crochet (although I have to say, I never got on very well with that, so need to get back onto it!), rag rugging, lacemaking, tapestry. You name it, I’ve probably tried it. I graduated onto using my mum’s sewing machine to make covers for her Kenwood mixer, the toaster and anything else that needed a material ‘home’!
So many friends over the years have asked me to teach them to do one of the above and after having done so on many an occasion, I realised that so many people have a desire to create and craft but don’t have the skills or know the people that they can learn from. I started to search out kits for them as presents thinking that if people were given everything they needed in order to create a project, they would be far more inclined to carry on and complete to finished item. It would also enable them to try something without a massive outlay. However, so many of the kits that I came across were, let’s say, a little more targeted at the ‘older’ customer and pictured some rather lovely
oh my god, what the hell? images of kittens and flowers!
So, I set out to find the most appealing DIY kits and realised that they do exist but are hard to find all in one place. Inching Closer seeks out the best kits that we can find from all over the world and are proud to have some rather amazing creative makers providing kits from the UK, US, Australia, France, Spain, Israel, Belgium, Germany and Poland.
Inching Closer has been treading slowly but surely over the past year and our big aim now is to provide cool and innovative DIY kits plus ideas, blog posts and tutorials to enable women and girls to get creative.
We are therefore now looking for the best and most creative DIY minds to come work with us. If you are or know of a DIY blogger that’s either established or just starting out and would like to have a platform on which to host their DIY blog posts, send them our way!
We will be featuring a creative ideas section of projects that our community can make either from scratch from the selection of individual components that can be bought on the site or it will be turned into kit with your name on it that they will be able to buy on-line.
Another new feature will be our on-line classes on the traditional arts and the new art of technology. These classes will last an hour so that you can even complete them in your lunch hour. The handmade skills you learn last a lifetime but it shouldn’t take this long to complete a project! If you are or know of an expert and would like to create an on-line class with us, please also get in touch!
This is the DIY generation and we believe there is an artist in all of us.
Anyway, the photo above my friends is the Manhattan skyline. What’s that got to do with Inching Closer as we are based in the UK other than the fact that we have a rather gorgeous DIY Map New York quilt pattern on the website? (shameless plug).
Well, the past three months has seen a
flippin’ massive bit of a change for our family as we have relocated for a few years to New York! Eeeekkk! Inching Closer remains in England however and operations are still very much on terra firma over there.
Moving two small children to another country has been an “experience” in itself but we are loving it and from a business point of view it’s been amazing to see how they do things the other side of the pond.
There are so many DIY stores here, I could literally spend all day every day in one! My office is one of the many fab coffee shops around Manhattan so have been using this map to try out a new one each time! Flat whites are a bit thin on the ground but they’re getting there and most of the time I can get
a half decent one when I ask for it!
The past three months has given us the opportunity to evaluate where we are going and what we want to achieve and we are keen to share so you can help shape our future. If you have any ideas yourself as to what you would like to see from us, please let us know. We are nothing without the community and we want this to work for you.
Thank you again for being part of our community and we look forward to creating more amazing things for you.
If you’ve made it to the end of this blog, got a bit more time (about 2.5mins) and are keen to see us in the flesh, take a sneek peek of a vid of our family and the first three months of our big apple adventure!
With much love and crafting
